 Excerpt:

“Seriously, what the hell is this, mate?”

Navid swallowed his huge mouthful of pie. “What do you mean?”

“This!” I shook the letter at him. “Is ASIO trying to buy my silence or what?”

Navid took the letter, held it at arm’s length and squinted at it. Looked like he needed reading glasses. Was he really getting that old? He passed the paper back to me. “It’s not a bad sum for not telling a story you’re not going to talk about anyway. I’d take it and book a nice holiday with it, if I were single like you. You could spend a month touring in the US or Europe for that, including flights.”

“But I can’t take a holiday if you need me as a witness in the inquiry. Have they finally set a date yet? It’s weird, getting offered money for silence before the hearings. Is this because there’ll be press coverage on the inquiry into that bastard Mott? And they want to make sure we won’t talk to the press?”

Navid stared at something in the distance. “No, no one’s set a date for the inquiry.”

“So why now?” I persisted. “Why are they throwing money at me? It’s Caitlin they have to worry about, and this is nowhere near as much money as the TV stations or magazines offer. I don’t see her agreeing to take ten grand to keep quiet. Not when she can get a hundred times that for an exclusive.”

Navid coughed. “I think they’ll be offering her a lot more than that. After all, she’s the one who almost died.”

“So it’s not just hush money? It’s compensation for damages suffered and…all the other shit it says in the letter? What about my sister? What about Alanna? Did she get a posthumous payout, too? And a hypocritical letter saying the department deeply regrets her kidnapping, rape, torture and death, but here’s some money to make it feel better? Shit, if Caitlin’s letter says that, expect fireworks.” My heart ached at just the sound of her name. I’d give anything to see her explode. I’d know she was alive and okay, wherever she was.

He lowered his voice. “If they can find her. There’s a rumour in the department that all the documents in her file are gone. Papers, digital, recordings of statements…everything, just gone. And the details of her witness protection arrangements, too, so that means she’s disappeared.”

I stared at him in shock, silence money forgotten. “You don’t know where she is? She could be dead or hurt or God knows what! You have to find her! She’ll need to give evidence at the inquiry, too. I mean, she nearly died because of him.” And I’d get to see her if she came for the inquiry, even if I had to camp outside the building. I’d know she was alive and okay, even if only for a moment. “Ask him where she is. He’ll know.”

“She was never going to be part of the inquiry. She didn’t have any contact with him beforehand and her statements will be enough, or they would have been, if we could find them. Now, I don’t even know if there’ll be an inquiry at all.” He sighed and lobbed his empty pie bag into the nearest bin.

I stopped dead. “What do you mean, no inquiry? I get paid off to shut up while that dickhead gets off scot-free? Fuck that.”

Navid sighed. “The justice system isn’t geared toward punishing dead people.”

“Yeah, which leaves Mott, seeing as everyone else is dead. Wait, hang on…are you saying he’s dead, too?” My mouth hung open. “Who killed him? Whoever did it’s a legend and I owe him a carton of beer. I’ve wanted to do it for years!”

Navid coughed out a laugh. “Then you owe Mott a carton of beer, because the official report says he killed himself. With an ornamental dagger, no less. Bit melodramatic, if you ask me.”

I found myself shaking my head. “That can’t be right. Mott was a mean bastard. He’d never do the world a favour and off himself. And if he did, he’d take people with him, or at least set someone up for his murder, so he could laugh all the way to hell. Who do you suspect?”

Navid shrugged. “Well, how many people hated him? It could be anyone.”

Caitlin was good with a knife, I thought idly, not willing to believe it was her. If anyone deserved to be on the point of her blade, it was him. His negligence…his indifference to what she might suffer had almost gotten her killed.

“Look, I got to get back to work. They’ve got Michael and me looking for her. One girl in twenty million people, if she’s even still in the country. The guys in Canberra want this whole affair over and done with as quickly as possible, so we got pulled off other projects to look for a girl who doesn’t want to be found.” He laughed, but sobered quickly. “Hey, she never mentioned anything to you, did she? About where she was headed, or the new name she’d be using? I remember the day Mott told her about the arrangements. She was really pissed off about them. Wish I’d asked her then.”

I shook my head. “If she’d told me anything, I’d have given in and started hunting for her long before now. I’d change my name and go into hiding, too, if I had to.” His words started to sink in. “Hang on. She never met Mott. He visited her in hospital when she was unconscious, but never afterwards. I’d never have let that bastard anywhere near her!”

He wouldn’t meet my eyes. “She spoke to me privately when you weren’t around, requesting a meeting with your superior. I made the arrangements and I drove her to the office and home again for both meetings. She spotted some inconsistencies in what he said, and told me she suspected he was corrupt. I dismissed it at first, figuring she was just a teenage kid with on overactive imagination, but some of the things she said rang some pretty loud alarm bells. Then I started to see him make mistakes, too. It took me four years to get enough evidence together to warrant an enquiry, and now he’s dead, so we’ll never know why he did it, or what else he knew.” He laughed quietly. “I wonder if she knew. I’d love to ask her now.”

I hesitated, then ploughed ahead anyway. “If you find her, can you tell me? I just want to know that she’s okay. It’s killing me, not knowing.”

He shook his head and wouldn’t meet my eyes. “Nathan, you know I can’t do that. She’s in witness protection for a reason, even if the official five years are up and she can let up on the secrecy now. She’s not the sort to go splashing her photo on every social media channel she can find just because she can.” He inhaled sharply, considering. “I’ll tell you what. If we do find her and I get a chance to speak to her, I’ll tell her that you wanted to know she was okay, and that you’d love to talk to her, but only if that’s what she wants. It’s not like you offered to go into hiding with her.”

“I would have if she’d asked me, or even wanted me,” I whispered, more to myself than to him.

Character Bios:

Sia, Phantom Wolf, white hair but turns to silver in state of Phantom Wolf, her nails turn into claws and her canines stretch past over her lips. Pale skin as she is both of the living and dead. She can speak to her Spirit Pack and runs with them on a full moon. She is in the state of immortality until the human who her life is connected with dies. Sia had to watch as her once human lover slaughtered her pack in front of her very eyes, and then killed her as well. She is strong, unaccepting of others advice and willfully minded.

Keeley, Sia’s best friend from when they were cubs. Although not part of her pack, she was much considered as her kin. She is faint hearted and kind, but is terror of what happened those many years ago when Sia’s family was massacred and Sia protected her by giving handing herself over. She has long brown hair and blue eyes. And has a healing nature.

Kiba, is the eldest Prince to the kingdom. He is fair natured but very strong natured and to become a great Alpha. He is witty and taunts a lot of people, mostly Sia as she bite back so quickly. He has a very deep caring nature in which only Sia has ever seen. Others more so see him as a pillar and fantasy to one day be his mate. He has thick black fur and hair of the Royal bloodline and iridescent blue eyes.

Saith, is the younger brother of Kiba. Although having the same black fur and blue eyes of the Royal family he is smaller than Kiba in muscular frame and his hair is longer, to his shoulders. He has for some time now been deeply in love with Keeley and turns almost savage if one threatens her. He is very protective of her and his family, which can at times be surprising in comparison to his more quiet and compassionate nature.

Lady Momiko, is an old wolf who although many years have aged on her skin is still passionately youthful and witty. She has an ill sense of humor and often hits others on top of the head with her stick that she carries around in a scornful yet playful manner. She has the sight of Spirit Wolf and is able to see premonitions and speak with Spirit Pack.

Trim, is a young cub who reminds Sia much of her little brother who was slaughtered those many years ago. He is deeply infatuated by Sia and does many things to impress her, he is strong and has wondrous potential as a fighter with his determination and maturity for such a young age. He instantly takes to Sia, not frightened by her appearance of Phantom Wolf. Trim lost both his parents after birth and it was Lady Momiko who adopted him as a son, having premonition of his greatness one day. Although she has not yet told him of such a fate and has no intention too.

About the author:

Kia Carrington-Russell is a young author working on her first series: “The Three Immortal Blades”. Kia began writing at the age of fifteen in high school- finding that all her warped and strange dreams were giving her a fantastic new world- and since then she has never looked back.

Kia-Carrington-RussellKia was born in a small town in Australia, moving around a lot at a young age until finding a stable town where she finished her schooling. Kia found herself enjoying and expressing herself through poetry, short stories and writing, photography, painting and drawing. All these mediums help Kia express the different world that she is so fond of.

In ‘Senior Art’ Kia focused on feminism and female empowerment; exposing through her work issues and concerns that many people would rather just “sweep under the rug”. In one art installation, Kia made a bed out of Pokémon cards- the concept being that when she slept a new world would come to life and it was the only one she saw and constantly lived in. Kia now focuses on her photography, writing and self-help blogs on her website: ‘Precious Living’.

Kia is now keenly working on “The Three Immortal Blades” and “Phantom Wolf” series knowing that these books must be shared with the world and that is what she aims to do now. Kia writes in her Australian home, trying to focus at times on simply what is running through her head, as her cats either terrorize her legs as scratching posts or her puppy barks in her ear for play-time. And as she continues her series, they grow with her book.

Kia is strongly supported by her friends and family and thanks them dearly for being with her along the bumpy road and nothing would please her more than having your support as well.

EXCERPT

With a gentle lurch, the car rose into the air. Katya grabbed hold of the partitions between the seats, her knuckles bumping the hand of the guest on her left, who had also grabbed for it. Maddox did not reach for a stronghold. His mouth twisted in amusement, watching Katya seek security as everything that held her ascended ten, twenty, thirty feet.

The climb proved gradual and effortless. Once Katya began to relax, she realized how far she could see. The lamplights of the carnival looked beautiful and elegant below them. The slight flickering of the burning gas gleamed off the metal structures throughout the carnival. It lost itself in the velvet of patron jackets and glimmered off their silks. It flashed across buckles on top hats and shoes. It lit up gold and silver jewelry.

Katya could barely breathe. She almost forgot how nervous she had been moments before. The car reached the top of the tower and stopped there, offering its occupants a rare view at the world around them. Katya stared down at the carnival, trying to pick out the details of the band playing in the center of it all. The massive Beast behind it still intimidated, but from this height, Katya marveled in the majesty of its design.

The car shuddered and lowered itself, detaching from its part of the sky. The other occupants chattered to each other excitedly, but Katya could barely form thoughts in her head.

“What do you think?” Maddox asked her.

Katya recited the first thing that came to mind. “The ride lasts for three cycles.” She admonished herself for relying on the only words she knew about the carnival and gave in to sharing Maddox’s enthusiasm. “It’s thrilling.”

The car paused briefly at the bottom before lifting again. Each time it rose, Katya focused on a different part of the carnival. She looked across to the other side, where the Kaleidoscope competed against the game stalls and the Cannon for popularity. It really did shift like a kaleidoscope from this height, the colors of the booths smearing in her vision as they rotated. She looked past Maddox to the El and the food stall beyond it. Magdalene would be handing out cinnamon-sugar desserts and sausages on buns, but Katya was riding the carnival they had staked their lives on. She was riding the dream Brady had worked on years ago. She doubted even he had been able to enjoy it.

The car rested on the ground and stayed there. The operator made his rounds again, helping the patrons get unbuckled and return to their feet. He directed them to an exit gate in the fence. Katya and Maddox filed out with the others to the common grounds of the carnival.

“Where to next?” Maddox prompted.

Katya’s heart pounded with the possibilities. “The coaster.”

“The big one?”

“No, I don’t think I’ll ever be brave enough for that.” Katya watched the Beast’s cars roar high above them. “The smaller one here.”

Katya linked her hand around Maddox’s arm, and they walked to the nearby El. Maddox repeated Katya’s lie to the ticket taker. “Mr. Warden wants us to make sure the coaster’s operating properly.”

The man hurried them past, offering a more courteous front to the waiting customers. “You’ll all have a turn, I assure you. Just a routine inspection.”

Another operator stood a few feet inside the fence, and he motioned for Katya and Maddox to stop where they were. They watched the coaster cars slide and weave their way along the track. A minute later, they slowed into loading position on the platform. The operator stepped over to help the guests out, and once they left the platform, his flexing fingers invited Katya and Maddox toward him. He buckled them into the front seat of the first car.

“Are you nervous now?” Maddox whispered into Katya’s ear.

Katya nodded, but she felt the rush of anticipation filling her chest. “It’s not too fast, is it?”

“You should know.”

“I don’t know. I can’t think of anything except how fun this is.”

The operator filled the remaining seats in the connected cars. With a signal to the ticket taker and the man Katya could not see who ran the switches, the cars jerked forward. This time, Katya and Maddox both reached for the metal grab bar in front of them. A mechanism in the track pulled the train of cars up the initial slope. The passengers behind Katya and Maddox murmured with apprehension and breathed audibly, awaiting the first of many drops.

The train rose steadily, taking its passengers up to a short plateau. Within seconds, the cars slid down, lifting Katya’s stomach into the top of her chest. She let out a shriek amidst the screams and shouts behind her. The train twisted to the left, curving to parallel the outer fence of the carnival. It rose a short distance and fell again, racing its passengers lower toward the ground. A second mechanism pulled the cars even higher than before.

In one graceful motion, the cars slipped down the next slope of track, curving away from the back of the grounds. They dipped down beside the side stage, where Katya could not tell what contest was taking place. The cars sped along, turning left only to bend back to the right. The track led them down beneath the iron structure and returned them safely to the platform.

Katya barely had time to catch her breath before the ride operator unbuckled her belt. She walked with Maddox to the exit gate, where a small wooden sign bore the words Thank You in painted, curling letters.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

  1. What is the best comment that a readers has given you?

I’ve gotten great support from a lot of people that keeps me going when the work gets tough.  One of the best things a reader told me recently was in a voice mail my mother-in-law left me when she finished my novel, XZA.  She said it was awesome and now that she knew the ending, she wanted to reread the whole book to enjoy it even more.  That’s a high compliment, creating a book readers want to revisit instead of always reaching for a new story.  There are so many great stories out there.

  1. Where do you prefer to write? In your home? In a café?

I work from home for my day job, so I already have a home office set up where I can type for eight hours a day.  I have to be comfortable without too many distractions in order to write, and I like knowing I already have everything I might need at hand – pens, paper, my desk planner, a glass of water, my phone, and some lip balm.  I used to be more fluid about where I wrote, and I’ve written in some unexpected places – during class, while sitting waiting for an appointment, bored at a restaurant, watching TV.  Most of my writing is computer-based now unless I get an idea I have to write down.

  1. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

I wrote and published for an entire year based only on belief.  Belief in myself.  Belief it would be worth it.  Belief readers would find and enjoy my books.  It was a tough year as I learned the new landscape of publishing.  I have a beautiful deck of cards with a different word and picture on each of them, and I stood the card for Believe where I could see it every day.  I made sure I looked at it, especially when I didn’t believe what I was doing would make a difference.  When I finally felt ready to move on to a new word, I realized it’d been a year since I started.  I knew then – and I feel now – I never could’ve willingly gone a whole year on belief if I’d known how long it would be ahead of time.  Focusing on what I was doing and the results I wanted pulled me through it.  I learned a lot about myself, and even though I still have lessons to learn about life and publishing, I’m much more confident today than I was then.

“What I Wouldn’t Do,” She Swings, She Sways

The first chapter of Steampunk Carnival is different than the rest of the book. It’s narrated by someone whose name isn’t revealed for several chapters. The reason he’s obsessed with filling a journal with his ideas isn’t clear until we find out who he is, but the song gives insight into his situation. He’s a man driven by longing, loneliness, and desperation. It adds extra layers and emotions to what’s shared at that point in the book.

“Kill The Lights,” The Birthday Massacre

I’m a big fan of the movie “Moulin Rouge.” In the director’s commentary, Baz Luhrmann talks about the interesting difference between points of view in the climactic scene when Satine dies after the big, pulse-pounding performance. The audience applauds. They loved what they saw. But what they missed was a murder attempt, and what they can’t see after the curtain closes is Satine’s heartbreaking death. This song represents that for Steampunk Carnival. All the guests see are beautiful costumes, spectacular rides, fun games, and delicious treats. They don’t know about the death threats, the violence, and the arguments. They never find out the games are rigged.

“Common Reaction,” Uh Huh Her

As the story unwinds, Katya finds herself in deeper and deeper trouble. She acquires more to lose – friends, her safety, a boyfriend – and realizes there are fewer things she can be sure of. A lot she took for granted isn’t true. This song expresses Katya’s confusion and caution. She doesn’t know how much to trust her boss, William Warden. She hopes everything will work out all right, but she knows any ending is possible.

“Hold My Hand,” Mister Heavenly

This song reminds me of Maddox’s approach to Katya in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. If Maddox has one thing going for him, it’s persistence. He tries several different tricks to get Katya to go out with him, and she turns him down several times. She’s not easily persuaded to trade her love of money for appreciation of simple fun.

“Shake It Out,” Florence & the Machine

This song provides the perfect backdrop to the night Katya finally gives in to spending time with Maddox. She leaves her fear, her distrust, and her rigid ideas about dating behind. Katya and Maddox ride three attractions at the carnival, which thrills Katya more than she anticipated. But more importantly, they’re finally able to share more about themselves and build a solid foundation for their relationship.

“Baptized by Fire,” Spinnerette

The lyrics and driving guitar in this song mirror what Katya and her friends are feeling by the time they confront the forces conspiring against them. Katya has seen William Warden’s inner nature, and she doesn’t like it. His security guards, allegedly hired to keep the employees safe, have been watching Magdalene like a hawk for weeks. Katya’s tired of meeting in secret, worrying about how the carnival’s reputation will survive the truth about its origins. But true to the song, with going to battle against powerful rivals comes a new beginning for all of them.

GUEST POST

Please welcome Elise Abram to Moonbeams over Atlanta.  What was your inspiration for creating a Young Adult Paranormal book?

My interest in popular culture has always leaned toward the paranormal. I love shows like “Ghost Whisperer”, “Supernatural”, “Almost Human”, “The Returned”, “The Walking Dead”, and “Vampire Diaries” to name a few. I count “Ghost Adventures”, “Long Island Medium”, “Ghost Hunters”, “Destination Truth” and “The Dead Files” among my current guilty pleasures. So it was no surprise when my mind kept on insisting I write some sort of paranormal novel. My first impulse was to write about vampires, but the market was saturated with vampire stories and I couldn’t think of a new approach to make my story stand out above the others.

I teach high school English. The culminating activity in the grade 10 academic English course is a novel study including a presentation of literary devices used in the novel. I’d taught the course more than a dozen times over the course of about five years. That meant I’d had to listen to at least 300 presentations. I’d listen to the themes in the novels and think, YA reading has changed so much since I was in school and the frankness of Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret was revolutionary reading.

It was around the same time I decided to self-publish my first novels. These novels, Phase Shift, The Mummy Wore Combat Boots and Throwaway Child, were about a team of archaeologists who find weird things on digs in Ontario (think “Indiana Jones”, “Tomb Raider”, and “Relic Hunter” all rolled into one). The librarians at my school were very supportive of my writing and they were the first ones to encourage me to write a YA novel. I pooh-poohed it at first, but the more I listened to student presentations on YA novels, the more I became convinced I could write one. In fact, I should write one.

My brain needs facts to consume before ideas begin to percolate, so I began to do research. I read Twilight, Miss Perigrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and Beautiful Creatures among others (but these are the ones that stuck out). Although I wasn’t a Twilight fan, Stephanie Meyer taught me how to put a new spin on an old idea with her vampires that shimmer in the sun. In Miss Perigrine, Ransom Riggs taught me I could give my characters practically any ability, but they should take pains to ensure the abilities are kept secret. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s Beautiful Creatures taught me how to pen a sweet, chaste romance.

I also became an avid reader of Chuck Sambuchino’s “Guide to Literary Agents Blog”, paying special interest in what the agents said in their interviews with respect to what they were looking for in the stories they were being sent and tried to incorporate that as well. In fact, my next novel is in response to one of the agents saying she would love to read a YA Time Traveler’s Wife. I’ve sort of taken that on as a personal challenge.

My students were always in the forefront as I wrote. I was always thinking about what they might write about, should they choose The Revenant as their culminating activity novel. To that end, I made sure there were themes embedded in the story, but that the story wasn’t primarily thematic in nature. I also tried to elevate the writing a bit in order to challenge them. Lastly, I tried to write a story that would appeal, not only to YA audiences, but New Adult and Adult ones as well.

The Revenant is a paranormal story that I’m hoping will introduce new characters and be of interest to everyone, ages fourteen and up.  If all goes well, there may be a sequel available to further the adventures of the revenant, the empath and the seer, soon.

Thank you Elise for being here with us today. 🙂

Author Bio:

Kia Carrington-Russell is a young author working on her first series: “The Three Immortal Blades”. Kia began writing at the age of fifteen in high school- finding that all her warped and strange dreams were giving her a fantastic new world- and since then she has never looked back.

Kia was born in a small town in Australia, moving around a lot at a young age until finding a stable town where she finished her schooling.

Kia is now keenly working on “The Three Immortal Blades” series knowing that this book has to be shared with the world and that is what she aims to do now.

Wildfire cover final

Synopsis:

The summer after her mother dies, Savanna Riera is forced to live in a weathered farmhouse in rural Texas. But as layers of dust are washed from the walls, her mother’s childhood home reveals secrets from the past, riddles everyone in town seems to understand; everyone but Savanna. When a wildfire breaks out across neighboring farmland, the boy next door calls on Savanna to help the victims driven from their homes. Dev is an artist with kind eyes and a fierce painting of her mother on his bedroom wall. But Savanna is drawn to Blake, a reclusive boy with a scar running down his face like a teardrop, who looks at Savanna as if she put it there. The three friends rally to bring relief to the evacuees. But when they face the fire of prejudice, they must rely on each other to get through the blaze unscathed.

Author Bio:

The first story K. Vann O’Brien ever wrote was about a balloon. Her fourth grade teacher read the story aloud to the class, and O’Brien realized the power of literature to inspire and delight. And she got a metal. And a cookie. And she quickly determined that all good things come with writing. In middle school she started a novel, which she pitched in high school, deciding she was much too mature for middle school humor. In college she studied Journalism, and started another novel, which warped into many different iterations as she took professional writing jobs to pay the bills after graduation. She’s now hard at work on her second novel, which she hopes won’t take quite so long to write.
